Breast Uplift Surgery
At ASET Hospital, we specialise in breast uplift surgery, also known as mastopexy, which is designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts.
The goal is to restore a more youthful shape and firmness to the breasts. This procedure can be performed alone or in conjunction with breast augmentation for added volume and firmness.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Uplift Surgery
The best candidates for a breast uplift are women who are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight.
They typically struggle with one or more of the following conditions due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, ageing, gravity, and genetics:
- Breasts that sag or have lost shape and volume
- Breasts that have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous
- Nipples that fall below the breast crease when breasts are unsupported
- Nipples and areolas that point downward
- One breast that is lower than the other
Procedure Details
Breast uplift surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure involves the following steps:
Incision Patterns
Depending on the degree of lift needed, the surgeon will choose the most appropriate incision pattern. Common incisions include:
-
- Around the areola
- Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
- Around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease
Reshaping the Breasts
Excess skin is removed, and the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, more youthful height.
Closing the Incisions
Incisions are brought together to reshape the now uplifted breast. Sutures are layered within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts.
Postoperative Care and Recovery
After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions. An elastic bandage or support bra may be recommended to minimise swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Here is what the recovery process typically involves:
- Initial Healing: Swelling and bruising are normal and will resolve over time. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid.
- Recovery Time: Most patients can return to work and normal activities within a few weeks, provided they avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise.
- Follow-up Visits: Essential for ensuring proper healing and assessing the outcome of the surgery.
Risks and Considerations
As with any surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, or reaction to anaesthesia.
Specific risks related to breast uplift surgery include unevenly positioned nipples or loss of nipple sensation.
These risks are rare and can be minimised by following the surgeon’s care instructions.
